Ongoing Evaluation

28.03.19

Target:

Write and design six slides on Microsoft PowerPoint for my presentation for my radio show podcast final major project. Ensuring that I include images and make the presentation interactive through asking the audience questions. I'm also creating a script to go alongside the presentation. Yes its achievable because I will have access to Microsoft PowerPoint therefore I will be able to create a PowerPoint and I will also have access to Microsoft word to write the script. This will be relevant for my project because I can gain feedback for my idea and adapt it accordingly. This will be done by Monday 29th March ready for the due date on Wednesday 3rd April.

Reflection:

Overall this went really well. I created a well presented power point and ensured that my presentation was interactive through asking my audience questions and recording their feedback in my research. I do think however I should have practised more on what I was going to say - as at times I struggled with this meaning the overall  professionalism of my pitch wasn't as good as it could have been. I also thought that I relied too much on my script and didn't make enough eye contact with my audience witch perhaps made them feel disconnected - this will come with practice as I find public speaking quite challenging. The research I carried out into the pitch such as beginning to come up with a target audience has really helped to understand what I want to include on the radio show podcast such as music from artists from ethnically diverse backgrounds, so I appeal to them - something which I have found out Radio 1 lacks.

3.04.19

Target:

I am going to carry out research and come up with a specific target audience, for things such as age, gender, ethnicity etc. I need to ensure that this is done before I start producing my radio show podcast as this research will give me a clear indication of how my show will be structured. This is going to be done by the 10th of April.

Reflection:

Overall this is going well, however I have underestimated the amount of research that goes into target audience. I feel like I have a real good idea of my target audience and this has been achieved by thorough research. I have ensured I have used a variety of sources to do this such as websites and reports.

10.04.19

Target:

I am going to carry out thorough research into music that should be popular among my target audience and that I want to play in my radio show podcast. I am going to need to research a variety of different sources to find this, such as the UK top charts and statistic websites. I want this to be done by the 15.04.19.

Reflection:

Overall,  I am really happy with research that I have conducted. I have used this through research to make informed decisions on the music that I am going to play on my radio show podcast. I believe I have a variety of songs that should appeal to my target audience such as music from ethnically diverse artists. I also learnt how to censor a song, as one of the songs that I picked contained an explicit word - I did this using audacity and using the reverse tool - this is a really useful skill that I have learnt.

15.04.19

Target:

I am going to look into the codes and conventions of radio shows and podcasts, through listening to popular radio shows and podcasts among my target audience of 16 to 29 and also using videos on YouTube to inform me on them. I plan to get most of this done by the 22nd of April however as with the other research I may add to this as my project develops.

Reflection:

I have started to do this and have found out some very useful information, that will help develop my radio show podcast and make it sound more professional  such as finding out about music beds, idents and jingles. I do feel however that I have not done enough sufficient research to fully develop my show therefore I will be carrying out more research and listening to radio shows and podcasts such as Radio 1 and capital FM in order to learn and develop my radio podcast show further. One area where I have lacked research is into podcasts, instead I have just focused most of my research into radio shows. I will ensure that I look into podcasts popular among my target age group and also look at their codes and conventions - again to develop my radio show podcast.

22.04.19

Target:

I am going to carry out research into the topical debate/current affairs segment of my radio show podcast which is 'Is TV dead?’ I am going to find reports and use graphs from reports to find data regarding the viewing figures of tv and also look at the growing popularity of streaming services like Netflix and Amazon. I am also going to contact my father (who I am interviewing and debating with him on   this subject as he works in audience research at the BBC) and ask whether he has any reports that he can send me. This should be achievable as I have access to lots of reports that my father can provide me and also reports, studies and e-books that are available online.

Reflection:

This is still a work in progress regarding the research but I am going to spend the rest of this week finishing researching this off. I have made some good progress and found some reports (one was provided by my father) and graphs with data that supports the argument that TV is dying. I have decided that I am going to have a more critical perspective on TV and be more for the argument that tv is dying, whereas my father is going to be more for tv, and debate the fact that tv is not dead - this way the listeners get to hear both sides of the argument and therefore it should make it more informative and entertaining to listen to - two important aims that I want to make sure I achieve. This research has really benefited my project, as I now feel confident to have a debate about this topic on my radio show podcast - which I didn't feel like before.

25.04.19

Target:

I am going to ensure that I complete my risk assessment forms for my radio show podcast production. This is important so I can carry out the production process safe and effectively. This will be achievable as I have access to risk assessment form which I can use, and also I have previous knowledge of fill these out from previous projects. I will ensure that I complete this by the 26.04.19.

Reflection:

This went well, I filled out two risk assessment from for two different locations (springboard tv recording studio and my house) - I found this quite easy as I have previously filled out many of these forms for previous projects. These are really helpful documents as they mean I can carry out the production process safely and effectively and minimise risks that can affect me and my father (he is an interviewee).

26.04.19

Target:

I am going to finish of the remainder of the research that I am carrying out on the topic of, 'Is TV dead?' and come up with questions that I am going to ask my interviewee (my father). This should be done by the 28th of April. I am also going to do some more research into podcasts and even listen to them to get an idea of how they sound and ow long they last.

Reflection:

This has gone really well, I have finished of the research and come up with all of the questions that I am going to ask my interviewee (my father).  I think if I had more time then I would do even more research however it's important that I start to focus on the production process as I want to ensure I have plenty of time producing my radio show podcast to ensure its to the best possible standard that I can achieve. Also as I had some free time I listened to a Radio One podcast with Greg James, to get an idea of how it was structured and the duration of it. I also looked into the length of how long average podcasts last.

27.04.19

Target:

I am going to ensure that by the 28th of April, I create a plan for my radio show podcast, so I know how my show will sound - this will be achievable as I have access to word which is where I will create my plan/script. I am going to ensure that my plan is more of a plan rather than a script as if I just read of a script it won't sound natural, something which is important to me.

Reflection:

This went really well I created a detailed plan of my radio show podcast, and know exactly what I want to cover, and have planned each section of the show.

1.05.19

Target:

I am going to ensure that I start producing the radio show jingles and idents for my project. Originally in my project proposal plan I was going to do this further down the line, however I have acted on the feedback that I have got from my tutors that it's best if you start the production process earlier on so that they can give feedback on it and I can therefore act on this. Furthermore it will mean I won't rush the production part of the project which I have done in previous projects. I want to have recorded and created my first radio jingle by the end of today using the software Logic Pro X. This should be achievable as I am going to ask one of my tutors (Tony Parr) who has extensive knowledge using this software to guide me through how to use it.

Reflection:

I totally underestimated the amount of time that this would take. I spend most of today trying to figure out how to use Logic Pro X as I didn't realise that it was a rather complex piece of software. I have now however, got a relatively good understanding of the software as one of my lecturers (Tony Parr) explained in great depth on how to use the software. I feel like I should have been more realistic with today's target. Therefore I am going to start actually recording and creating my radio jingle and idents tomorrow.

2.05.19

Target:

Now that I have the knowledge of how to use Logic Pro, I am going to start to record and create my radio jingle. I want to ensure that by the end of the day I have recorded and edited the voice over in audacity and applied the necessary effects such as adjusting the EQ and compression that I have found out from a YouTube video by Mike Russel (an audio editing software). I also want to have at least imported this audio into final cut pro x. this should be achievable as I have access to the Logic Pro x, audacity and also a condenser microphone.

Reflection:

The recording went really well - I managed to record my voice-over for my radio jingle and also edit it using audacity. I learnt how to make my voice have a radio effect suitable for radio jingles from a YouTube video I found and I am really happy with work I completed. Furthermore I have also imported this audio into Logic Pro X and started editing it in the programme.

3.05.19

Target:

I am going to finish of creating and editing my radio jingle and also make a radio ident using Logic Pro X. This should be achievable as I have access to Logic Pro X. I want this to be done by the 6.05.19.

Reflection:

I am really glad to say that I completed all of this today - although it still took me a while to work out how to use certain features of the programme such as splitting audio however with patience and perseverance I got there in the end.

Target:

I am also going to upload all of the screenshots that I have taken of me using Logic Pro X and audacity to make my jingle and ident to my blogger.

Reflection:

I completed this and have clearly explained with screenshots what I have completed using Logic Pro X and audacity. I want this to be done by the 6.05.19.

6.05.19

Target:

I am going to try and record the interview/discussion/ debate with my father (David Bunker) on the topic: Is TV Dead? I want to have recorded this by the end of the day using audacity. This will be achievable as I have access to a microphone and software like audacity.

Reflection:

Overall this went well. I feel like we had a good discussion however it wasn't quite as much of a debate as I hoped it would be, as I don't think I questioned David enough and challenged his arguments enough. Also I had some problems with background noise with the microphone - as it is   a very sensitive microphone it picked up a slight bit of electrical interference and hissing sound - however I don't think it’s too noticeable. Also I feel like I repeated the same statistics too many times, but apart from that I feel like the interview had some really good content in it and that David (my father) said some really insightful answers to my questions. Although I had prepared more questions and statistics I ran out of time in the interview to ask them as I have quite a strict time limit of around 22 minutes to my podcast.

8.05.19

Target:

Today I am going to try and begin recording the rest of my radio show podcast. This should be achievable as I have access to a condenser microphone and a Zoom H4n recorder and also I have a full day to do it so I'm confident I will make good progress.

Reflection:

I am really happy with how this has gone. I have managed to record the rest of the radio show podcast. At times it was frustrating as I had to record certain parts of the show many times before I was happy with how it sounded and also the length of the different segments however I am now happy with what I have recorded. I feel like I was passionate but not to 'in your face' (from my research I found out that people didn't like this)in terms of my personality on the show. I even started to import the audio into adobe audition and began the editing process.

9.05.19

Target:

I am going to continue the editing process, using adobe audition (this should be achievable as I have access to this software) and hope to have created a first edit by the end of this week.

Reflection:

Overall this has gone well - I managed to make a first edit, one of the next things I am going to do is play it back to people in my college group who are in my target age group (15-29) to gather their feedback.

15.05.19

Target:

Today I am going to upload the screenshots that I have taken of me editing the audio using Adobe audition and explain what I am doing each step of the way. I want this to be done by the end of the day on the 16.05.19.

Reflection:

I am have made very good progress on this. I have uploaded most of the screenshots that I currently have however I may add more if I make any further edits. This did taker longer than expected as I was hoping to get all of this done by 17.05.19 however I still have some more to upload - I didn't realise how many screenshots I had. I also did encounter a problem today which slowed down my progress, my external hardrive which had all of my work on suddenly stopped working and wasn't recognised. Thankfully, I took it to Scott who works in the media department of the college and he managed to re-format it and restore it - I was very grateful for this. I have learned from this experience the importance of backing up all of your work on multiple different hard drives, as if my one couldn't have been fixed I would have lost a lot of work.

17.05.19

Target:

I am going to play my radio show podcast, to people in my college group who are in the target age group of (15-29) to gather their feedback on it, and potentially make changes if I feel it will improve the show. I will also ask for my tutors feedback. I will then record this into my blog and reflect on this. I want this to be done by the end of today and this should be achievable as I have access to my tutors and my peers and also Blogger on the computer. I want to finish this by the end of today.

Reflection:

This went rather well - I got some really useful constructive criticism which has helped me improve my radio show podcast. This included comments about how the music bed was too loud, and irritating - I acted on this advice and did some further editing to my radio show podcast. Usually in previous projects I was reluctant to ask for feedback as I was worried about having to re-edit my content however I now realise the importance of this. I   also created a feedback form to get more focused feedback.

21.05.19

Target:

I am going to ensure that I create a sound list for my project as this will mean I can easily identify and locate where all of the sounds are if I need to re-edit the production. I want this to be done by the 22.05.19. This should be achievable as I have access to a sound list.

Reflection:

I created a sound list relatively quickly which means I can now easily identify and locate where all of the sounds are if I need to re-edit the production.

22.05.19

Target:

I am going to ensure that I research and further my knowledge into the details of intellectual property, as in this project I am using copyrighted content such as songs. I am going to ensure that I look into the copyright rules to do with educational use. This can be achieved ass I have access to the internet and find websites such as the UK government website which should explain intellectual property laws. I want to ensure that this is done by the end of today.

Reflection:

I am happy with how this research went - I have certainly expanded my knowledge into intellectual property which could come in useful later on down the line as I am interested in the area of sound in the media industry as a career so knowing the rules about intellectual property will be very important.

23.05.19

Target:

I am going to carry on getting more feedback about my radio show podcast. I am going to play a segment of the radio show podcast to people in my target audience and get their feedback using the feedback form I have created.  This will be achievable as I have access to people in my college group including one of my tutors who make up a large proportion of my target audience. I am also friends with someone from an ethnically diverse background - this is also an important part of my target audience. I want this to be done by the end of 29.05.19.

Reflection:

I have managed to gain some focused feedback from people in my target audience that has confirmed to me that I have appealed to a wide range of people in my target audience. I also learnt that there were parts of my radio show podcast that some people in my target audience didn't like so much, such as some people loosing interest in the discussion part of the show and how the music didn't appeal to everyone. Overall from my feedback I think I have done a good job of appealing to my target audience however I know what parts of the show to adapt to make it even more appealing.

30.05.19

Target:

As my show is a podcast it’s important that I have a good online presence, so along with SoundCloud account that I have already created, I am   also going to create a website to accompany my podcast. This will mean listeners of my podcast will have somewhere to go, to find out more about the radio podcast station. I am also going to create a fictitious merchandise shop page on the website, as this would help give the station more identity and also make revenue which it could invest in music licensing if the radio show podcast ever went commercial. I am going to ensure that I have completed this by the end of the 31/05/19.

Reflection:

I have created a fully functioning website that looks professional along with a fictitious merchandise shop on the website. I found the website easy to create as I am familiar with using the WIX website builder for personal projects. I have definitely realised that creating websites is a great way to accompany the different media products that you make - as it gives them more context and allows the consumers of your media products to learn more about them. I going to ensure in future products that when I   create other media products such as documentaries for example that I will also create a website for it as well.

3.06.19

Target:

I am going to ensure that I start writing my evaluation ensuring that I reflect and evaluate the creative process. This will be achievable as I have access to Microsoft Word to write this, and also evaluation structure documents. I will also ensure that everything on my blog is up to date and make any minor tweaks that are needed. I want this to be done by 7/06/19.

Reflection:

This went really well - I feel like I effectively evaluated and reflected on the creative process, highlighting the lessons I have learnt. This did take a while to write but I am happy with the finished evaluation. In the future I may look at other ways to evaluate projects such as recording voice over commentary, on how it went. I also made a few minor tweaks and I am now confident that my project is finished.

  1. As we have discussed... copy your reflections from your ongoing SMART target document... taking these into account... WHAT happened, SO WHAT was your role and action and NOW WHAT would you do next to improve your FMP and/or future productions? Work on this as soon as your schedule allows, Joe.

  2. It appears to have been worthwhile to keep an ongoing log of what you do in the production process because it has allowed you to be reflective and will therefore help you when you write up your final evaluation.
